Early Intervention for Struggling Readers (4 Part Series)
This series of lectures will focus on the essential components in teaching young students (K-3) who are
struggling to learn to read. The first lecture will present an overview of Ehri’s model of the phases of reading
development to provide a framework for reading interventions. Other topics will include providing instruction in
phonological awareness and sight words, how to help students learn to break apart multi-syllabic words, ways
to help students increase their reading fluency, and ways to help students build their vocabulary and support
reading comprehension. Although the focus is on struggling students, all students can benefit from systematic,
explicit instruction in reading.
